Outstanding Learner Support

Hull College’s friendly Learner Support Services Team is based at the college’s Queen’s Gardens site and offers a service at every college site.  At Hull College we put you, our learner, first.  Support and Guidance for Learners is recognised by Ofsted, the inspection body for colleges, as outstanding.

The college is committed to ensuring that all learners receive the very highest level of support, from initial enquiry and application, though to successful completion and progression to further study, training or employment we are here to support you.

The range of services provided by the college’s expert Student Support Team is extensive and includes:

Course Information, Advice and Guidance

We know that deciding which course is best for you is one of the most important decisions that you will ever have to make.  You will find detailed information about each of the courses that are available to you on this web site. 

In addition, expert information, advice and guidance is available to help you choose the right course, whether you are considering coming to college for the first time or progressing from one course or another we can help.  We can provide you with information and advice on further education, higher education and work based training opportunities.  The college’s Learner Support Services Team is accredited to the Matrix Standard for the provision of Information, Advice and Guidance.

Careers Education and Guidance

Specialist careers guidance is available to you from the college’s very own Connexions team, specialist advisers will help you explore career paths including education and employment pathways.  More information about the Connexions service is available at www.connexionshumber.co.uk  Alternatively www.nextstephumber.org.uk provides information and advice for adults including current information relating to career pathways.

Applying to study at Hull College

We are happy to advise you on those courses for which you need to apply, including entry criteria and any application deadlines that might apply.

Applying for Higher Education

Specialist advice is available to those applying for a higher education course offered by either Hull College or another higher education provider.  We can advise on application arrangements for those applying for full-time courses via the University and College’s Admissions Service (UCAS).  Further information is available at www.ucas.ac.uk  Details of the extensive range of financial support available to full and part-time higher education learners is available at www.dfes.gov.uk/studentsupport/ or alternatively www.aimhigher.ac.uk

Financial Support

Information about the financial support that may be available to you is available on this web site.  In addition, whether you are a further or higher education learner, part-time or full-time, we will provide you upon request with information and advice on the extensive range of financial support that may be available to you, this  includes Educational Maintenance Allowances, Adult Learning Grants and, for higher education students, Student Loans.  See ‘applying for higher education’ above for further details of the financial support that is available to higher education students.

Help with Transport Costs

If you are a further education student you may be entitled to financial support to help meet the costs of travel to and from college, our team of specialist advisers can provide you with detailed information.

Fees

Information on tuition and examination fees is available upon request.  We can also provide details of concessions that may be available if you are in receipt of income based benefit.

Child Care

The college has a number of excellent Ofsted inspected child care centres and, dependant upon your personal circumstances, financial support may be available to help meet the costs of child care, the Learner Support Services team can provide further information.

Confidential Counselling Service

A confidential counselling service is available to students from our professional counselling team.

Accommodation

The Learner Support Services team is able to provide you with Information and advice on a range of accommodation that is available to learners living away from home.

Personal Tutor

Every learner at the college has a dedicated Personal Tutor. They are available to support you with your work and to work with you to ensure that you are on target to successfully complete your course.

Learning Mentors

A team of specialist Learning Mentors is available to support you and to ensure that you settle into the college community as quickly as possible.

Hull College Chaplaincy — Spiritual support for the College Community

The Chaplaincy Service is here for you.

Club 16-18

We want you to enjoy your time at college and to make the most of the time that you spend with us.  The college’s national award winning Club 16-18 team provide a wide range of social and recreational activities for our 16 to 18 year old learners to participate in when they are not studying.  Look out for the posters advertising forthcoming events.

The Hull College Student Union

The College is fortunate to have an active Student Union which hosts an annual 'Freshers Fair' for students at the beginning of the Autumn term. This event is designed as a first introduction to other student members and is supported by many external agencies, focussing on building your social networks, hobbies and interests, and health and well being issues. Social events are organised by the Union throughout the year, giving students an opportunity to participate in many activities, sporting events and external visits. Through the Student Union you can make your voice heard, locally and nationally, on issues that concern you.

Learner Support and Additional Learning support

The college’s response to social inclusion is acknowledged by Ofsted as being outstanding.  The college can provide help if you have a learning difficultly or disability.  The college’s specialist team of support workers is available to provide dedicated support.  Further information about the support that is available is given in the Student Charter.  If you need support please ask, we can support you at the application stage and during interview as well as during your course, we’re here to ensure that all of our students enjoy the best possible experience.
